A "living painting" I developed for 2014's MagiQuest 2.0. The goal was to create a storybook page-like feel, with visual depth and movement, yet still keep it simple, relying only upon 2D translations, rotations, opacity, and layer masks to minimize real-time rendering requirements.
I made the illustration, broke the layers into components and alphas to use in Unity, and gave the animator ( https://www.artstation.com/scybereye ) direction and technical tips on how to best to handle each element, to retain the floaty, airy feel. Adding in the meteors was the animator's idea though-credit where credit is due.
There are a couple elements that didn't make it into this render I ultimately received, so I went back with Blender and composited in the glow on the leftmost tree, and the waterfall mist floating up from the bottom.
